The BJP expanded its Northeast footprint today with a spectacular win in Tripura, ending the two-decade run of the CPM’s Manik Sarkar as chief minister. In Nagaland, the BJP looks set to form government along with its new regional partner Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party, if the alliance holds on to current leads. In Meghalaya, the ruling Congress is leading but is way short of a majority and has begun hectic negotiations with smaller parties for support. So has the BJP, confident it can put together a post-poll alliance to form government. “People of Meghalaya, Nagaland and Tripura have spoken,” tweeted Prime Minister Narendra Modi, adding, “Tripura election is an epoch-making one.”
